1978 TO 2013: LEPROSY CENTRE SILIGURI
Leprosy has been regarded as curable for many years; however, a lack of knowledge about the symptoms of the disease and often also financial hardship means that many infected people do not seek medical help until much too late.
For years, the leprosy centre in Siliguri has been carrying out important medical work. They treat leprosy patients as well as patients suffering from various other diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria free of charge. Usthi supported the leprosy centre on an ad hoc basis for many years until 2013.
1990 TO 2005: DAKSHINDARI, KOLKATA
Children’s Hospital: In 1990, Usthi gave the approximately 80,000 inhabitants of the Dakshindari district in Kolkata access to medical care. Responsibility for the outpatient clinic and the children’s hospital with 40 beds was transferred to the city of Kolkata in 2005.
Infrastructure Project: As part of an infrastructure project, important infrastructure was built and expanded in the Dakshindari district. The project included improving the drinking water supply and building sanitary facilities, sewers and children’s playgrounds. The completed project was then handed over to the city of Kolkata.
