1992 TO 2016: BANGUR HOME

Every day, countless children fight for their survival in the streets of India’s big cities. Life on the streets is extremely dangerous for them and they could be caught by human traffickers at any time.

After twelve girls were accommodated in an apartment above the Usthi office in Kolkata in 1989, a larger family community was established in the middle of Kolkata in 1992. The “Bangur Home” provided a safe environment for up to 35 orphans. The girls were able to grow up, play and study within the protected framework of this family community.

At the end of 2016 we successfully completed the project, as all the girls had become independent young women able to stand on their own two feet. It makes us very proud to see what they have achieved. Thanks to great efforts, they have succeeded in successfully asserting themselves on the Indian labour market and leading an independent life. Some of them work for airlines, others in the hotel industry or in the IT sector, and some have already started their own families in the meantime.
