Taking initiative and responsibility: In the children\u2019s clubs in Usthi’s project region Dhadin, Nepal, committed girls and boys come together, develop their own ideas and put them into practice as a team. In doing so, they learn that together, they can make a difference.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the last Friday of every month, groups of schoolchildren come together. The children plan their own activities, divide up responsibilities and decide together what will be on the programme. Sometimes they organise a poetry competition or quiz afternoon; at other times, they take part in activities at their school or in the wider community. A teacher supports each children\u2019s club during its meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowerment through active participation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The children\u2019s clubs regularly address issues that are relevant to their communities. Last year, for example, they took part in an awareness day against gender-based violence as part of the \u201816 Days of Activism to stop Violence against Girls and Women\u2019 campaign. The children also use discussions to raise awareness of social issues in their communities, such as child marriage, drug abuse and gambling addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meetings are not just about taking action and raising awareness \u2013 they are also about having fun together. The children experience what it means to create something together and put their own ideas into practice. They learn to take responsibility, discuss ideas with one another and make decisions as a group. These experiences help develop important social skills and lay a strong foundation for children to grow into active and responsible members of their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project team provides support to children\u2019s clubs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As part of the education project<\/a>, Usthi\u2019s local partner organisation provides targeted support and guidance to the children\u2019s clubs. The children receive materials to help them plan and carry out their activities. Each club has its own \u2018toolbox\u2019 for this purpose. At the same time, the children are supported in establishing effective structures \u2013 for example, by defining roles and responsibilities or setting up new clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the project supports 14 children\u2019s clubs. A total of 185 children regularly take part in the activities, more than half of them girls. The clubs show that when children experience the difference they can make together, they enjoy getting actively involved in their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
