Flash Flood in Nepal

On Wednesday, 26 August 2026, a devastating flash flood caused widespread destruction in Nepal, north-west of Kathmandu, along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. Lives were lost and many people remain missing. Homes, roads and vital infrastructure have been destroyed, leaving families without their livelihoods. Usthi is deeply saddened by the devastating events. Our thoughts are with the victims, those still missing and their families.

Children and families in Usthi’s education project are not directly affected by the disaster

The impact of the disaster extends to Dhading District, west of Kathmandu, where Usthi works to improve access to quality education. However, the 14 villages where Usthi works with public schools are not located along the flooded rivers and have not been directly affected by the destruction caused by the flash flood.

Our local project team is in close contact with the schools and the families of the children involved in the project. Based on the information available to us at present, the children and families in Usthi’s education project have not been directly affected by the flash flood.

Severe impacts on communities in the surrounding areas

The surrounding communities are facing serious consequences as a result of the flash flood. Search and rescue operations are under way, while the risk of further flooding also needs to be taken into account. Many families in the region are missing relatives or people they know. Vital infrastructure and access routes have been destroyed. Thousands of families have lost their livelihoods.

Project team continuously monitors the situation on the ground

The team of our partner organisation in Nepal is continuously monitoring developments and remains in close contact with other local stakeholders. Together, they are assessing the situation to gain a clearer understanding of the short- and medium-term need for assistance over the coming weeks and months.

It is already clear that the severe impact of the flash flood will affect the region for a long time to come. Usthi is closely monitoring further developments and will provide updates on new findings and possible support measures.
